The short answer

Come Tuesday to Saturday, at 10am, when the museums open. Avoid Mondays, when they are closed, and arriving after 4.30pm, the last entry. The first Sunday of each month is free for everyone, so plan for company. In summer, do the museums in the heat of the day and the courtyards in the evening. From September to December, the curators' lunchtime talks run at 1pm.

What changes at the castle through the year?

Less than you might fear, because most of what you pay for is indoors. Three things you plan around move with the calendar.

  1. The free days. The first Sunday of every month is free for everyone. The second Tuesday is free to anyone up to 25.
  2. The events. Summer brings Estate al Castello to the Cortile delle Armi. Autumn brings exhibitions and the Pausa Pranzo in Museo talks.
  3. The closures. The museums close every Monday, and on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.

The hours you work with stay the same all year. The courtyards are open from 7am to 7.30pm every day, free. The museums open from 10am to 5.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, with the last entry at 4.30pm.

Which month is best?

For the museums, any month suits you. They are indoors, and your opening hours never change. For a whole day that mixes the castle with a walking tour, the shoulder months are kinder. From March to May, and from mid-September to November, the walks are comfortable and the evenings still long enough for Parco Sempione.

September 2026 has an extra reason. The Passione Disegno exhibition in the Salette della Grafica runs until 27 September, drawn from a cabinet of more than 30,000 works on paper, from Leonardo to Keith Haring. The Pausa Pranzo in Museo talks began on 9 September.

Is summer a good time to visit?

Yes, if you plan round the heat. The museums are the cool part of the day, so put them in the early afternoon. Keep the open-air courtyards and the park for the morning or the evening, when the courtyards stay open until 7.30pm.

You feel the heat most on a walking tour. The Last Supper combinations run three to six hours on foot, much of it across open squares. One traveller on a historic walk in June 2026 called it a very hot day, and the guide kept the group going. Take water, a hat and the shortest walk that gets you the Last Supper slot.

If you come in summer, you also get Estate al Castello. In 2026 it ran from 12 June to 9 September in the Cortile delle Armi, with 2,300 seats, more than forty events and 25 free cinema nights. It returns each summer, so check the programme before you go.

What about a wet day?

If it rains, you are in the right place. The museums are indoors, and one ticket keeps you busy for two to three hours. The Pietà Rondanini museum has lockers in its atrium for your coat and umbrella.

You still have the battlements, too. The Tour delle Merlate, the guided evening walk on the ramparts, runs in bad weather because the walk is covered. It goes on Thursdays and Saturdays at 7.30pm, from age 8. The underground Tour dei Sotterranei, along the covered way of the Ghirlanda, runs on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am. Both are booked with Ad Artem.

On a wet day, the guided tours earn their refund window. Every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours ahead. The castle's own tickets never refund.

If you speak English and can choose, Saturday is the strongest day. The castle's own €20 guided visit starts at 11am, museum ticket included, with no booking. Meet at 10.45 at the Info Point inside the Filarete Tower.

Which hour of the day?

  • 7.00am — the courtyards open, free. The quietest time to stand under the Filarete Tower.
  • 9.30am — the Info Point opens, Tuesday to Sunday.
  • 10.00am — the museums open. Start here if the museums are the point of your day.
  • 1.00pm — the Pausa Pranzo in Museo talks, from 9 September to 16 December 2026.
  • 4.30pm — the ticket office closes, and the last entry to each museum sector.
  • 5.00pm — last entry to the Merlate Panoramiche battlement walk.
  • 7.30pm — the courtyards close.

The lesson is simple. Reach the museum desk by 2.30pm if you want two hours inside.

When are the free days for the rest of 2026?

The first Sunday of every month is free for everyone. The next ones are 4 October, 1 November and 6 December 2026, then 3 January 2027. The second Tuesday is free to anyone up to 25: 13 October, 10 November and 8 December 2026.

Free days draw people who would not otherwise come. Plan for a livelier castle, and claim your free ticket online as an "ingresso omaggio" so you skip the counter. If you want a quiet visit instead, pick an ordinary weekday and pay the €10.

Some visitors never pay at all. Under-18s go free every day, and so does a visitor with disabilities and one companion.

What is on this autumn?

The Pausa Pranzo in Museo talks run from 9 September to 16 December 2026, from 1pm to 1.30pm. The castle's curators lead them, and your museum ticket covers entry. Book by email by 3pm the day before.

The Premio MilanoVetro-35 finalists' show in the Sala Castellana runs until 13 September. The digital exhibition Collezionare mondi, drawn from the Bertarelli map collection, runs until 30 September. The Castello SottoSopra puzzle tours on the ramparts and underground run to 31 December 2026, Tuesday to Sunday.

A few things you cannot see right now. The Sala delle Asse, painted for Ludovico il Moro in 1498, is shut for restoration, so plan your ducal-rooms visit around the Ducal Chapel instead. The prehistory section of the archaeology museum is also closed. The rest of the museums are open as usual.

What about Christmas and New Year?

The museums close on 25 December and 1 January. Either side of those dates you get the normal hours, Tuesday to Sunday. The courtyards stay open every day.

December has two free days: 6 December for everyone, and 8 December for anyone up to 25. The lunchtime talks end on 16 December, and study days on nineteenth-century photography fill 14 and 15 December. In winter you visit indoors, and the museums are built for it.

How far ahead should you book?

For the castle alone, you rarely need to. The €10 ticket is sold at the desk on the day. Book ahead for a free first Sunday, for a guided tour with a fixed time, and for anything that includes the Last Supper.

If your date is fixed and the weather is not, book something that refunds. A Sforza Castle booking through a tour cancels free up to 24 hours out. A castle ticket cannot be refunded at all.

Can I walk the castle battlements?
Yes, on the Merlate Panoramiche, a €10 unguided walk along a stretch of the ramparts, Tuesday to Sunday with last entry at 5pm. Groups of up to 25 go up every twenty minutes with a warden, and a lift makes it step-free. It is a separate ticket from the museums.
Can I go into the castle's underground passages?
Yes, on a guided tour. The Tour dei Sotterranei follows the covered way of the Ghirlanda, the vaulted brick passage in the old moat, on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am for ages 10 and up. The evening battlement tour runs on Thursdays and Saturdays at 7.30pm, from age 8.
What is there for children at the castle?
Mummies in the Egyptian gallery, a printed children's map of the museums, puzzle tours on the ramparts and in the underground passage, and Parco Sempione behind the walls. The Merlate Panoramiche has a lift, so a pushchair can go up.
