An Overview

Castello Sforzesco is a roughly square fortress with massive round towers at each corner and the iconic Filarete Tower rising 70 metres above the main façade. The outer walls — up to four metres thick — originally enclosed an area of 25.9 hectares and were surrounded by a moat designed in part by Leonardo da Vinci.

The castle is divided into three main zones: the military outer complex (Piazza d'Armi), the residential Corte Ducale, and the Rocchetta — the innermost fortified keep to which the duke could retreat in times of siege. Each zone reflects a different phase of construction and a different architectural intent.

The exterior projects power and impregnability. The interior is something else entirely: arcaded Renaissance galleries, painted ceilings, vaulted corridors, and the kind of spatial elegance that placed this castle among the finest residences in 15th-century Europe.

    Filarete Tower

    The 70-metre central tower designed by Antonio Averulino (Il Filarete) in 1452. Destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1521, reconstructed faithfully by Luca Beltrami in 1905. The castle's defining landmark.

    Corner Towers

    Four massive circular towers anchor the corners of the main façade, designed by architect Bartolomeo Gadio. Their circular form was a deliberate innovation — better at deflecting cannon fire than square towers.

    Corte Ducale

    The residential heart of the Sforza court — an elegant arcaded courtyard with Renaissance galleries on multiple levels. Galeazzo Maria Sforza transformed it into a luxury residence after Francesco's death.

    The Rocchetta

    The innermost fortified keep — a castle within the castle. The last line of defence, to which the duke could withdraw if the outer walls fell. Its tower is one of the oldest surviving parts of the complex.

The Three Main Zones

The vast central parade ground behind the main entrance — originally used for military exercises and troop assemblies. Today it is an open public space covering most of the castle's interior footprint, freely accessible to all visitors.

The residential and ceremonial heart of the castle. Built by Galeazzo Maria Sforza as a luxurious ducal palace, with elegant arcaded galleries topped with slender semicircular arches. Now houses the Museum of Ancient Art and the Pietà Rondanini.

The innermost fortified enclosure — the castle's last refuge. Its tower predates the Sforza rebuilding. Today it houses the Trivulzio Tapestries collection, the Egyptian Museum, and the Musical Instruments Museum.

Leonardo & Bramante's Contributions

The castle's architectural story cannot be told without Leonardo da Vinci and Donato Bramante, both of whom worked here during the reign of Ludovico il Moro in the 1480s and 1490s.

Leonardo's most visible surviving contribution is the Sala delle Asse — the vaulted ceiling of the great hall in the Rocchetta tower, which he painted with an elaborate trompe-l'oeil canopy of intertwined mulberry trees. Recent restoration work has uncovered additional painted elements beneath centuries of overpaint, still being carefully revealed.

Less visible but equally significant is Leonardo's design of the castle's moat and defensive system — an engineering commission from Ludovico il Moro in 1482. Leonardo's notebooks contain detailed studies of the moat's geometry and the positions of defensive outworks, some of which influenced the final built form.

Bramante contributed architectural elements to the Corte Ducale and may have worked on the design of the Rochetta courtyard. His influence is felt in the proportions and refinement of the residential quarters, which bear the hallmark of early Bramantesque classicism.
